Editor's Note People of Note

Happy week 10, RIT. We've reached the end - the end of our wits, the end of the quarter, the end
of the year.

As is frequently done at such junctures, Reporter is taking a step back. Taking stock. For this issue,
we have taken a close look at the RIT community, and compiled a list People of Note 2008.

Whether they've made the list for something as high profile as organizing the first Imagine RIT
Innovation and Creativity Festival, or something more low profile, such as serving drinks,...

Photo Editor's Note Seeing Stories

In case you haven't noticed, there are lots of cameras on this campus. Even when they are making
incriminating images destined for the eyes of prospective employers, they are telling stories. Writers
need to go to school for years to learn language, but everyone with eyes speaks photo. Here are
a few stories for you to read, complete with nouns, verbs, and (we hope) adjectives.

Notes from the Innovation Festival

I hope you all left your dorm rooms this past weekend. The Innovation Festival (see "Institute Hosts
Imagine RIT") was actually really cool.

If, by chance, you happened to miss the festival, here are some of the less publicized highlights of
the weekend

1. Roving, advice-dispensing alumni. I ran into one of the former Editor in Chiefs of Reporter from
the 1960's, and was surprised to learn that there had once been a bar in the basement of the...

Letters to the Editor

Dear Reporter
I am writing this letter concerning the cartoon
entitled, "How RIT Can Use Antisemitic
Graffiti To Its Advantage" in the April
25 edition of Reporter. While we at RIT encourage
artistic expression and freedom of
speech, this cartoon crossed a line that is at
the very least hurtful, and to many, hateful.
Throughout history, symbols have held strong
meanings and evoked powerful emotions.
Our challenge is to respect the history of
such symbols, and those who hold...

Of the 10,000 magazines Reporter printed this week, no two
are exactly alike. What you see is something truly unique; literally, it is one of a kind.

How did we do it?
On April 9, 11, and 14, Reporter set up stations in the lobbies of the SAU, Nathaniel Rochester Hall,
and Building 70. At each of these stations, our photographers pulled aside passersby and shot their
portraits on a white background. The only requirement was that they have an RIT ID card to scan,
and that they give...

Editor's Note Generation Me

We really are a special generation.

Although we are frequently narcissistic (see Ridiculously Good-Looking), wasteful (see Waste Audit), and, quite frankly,
mediocre (see Mediocre Generation), there is something that sets us apart from all others Every generation that
came before us has a collective memory of life before computers; every generation after us will not.
Straddling the line, we really are in a unique position.

True, it's hardly anything we can take credit for. We have...

Dear Reporter,

Last week's article on the selection of Provost
Stan McKenzie as the RIT 2008 Commencement
speaker greatly surprised and, frankly,
disappointed me. I have come to expect better
from students of RIT's caliber, as well as from
our distinguished student magazine.

The quality of RIT is ultimately measured not

the campus to speak, but rather by the quality
of the people who work and learn here and by
what they accomplish. For...

I don't agree with Josh.

It's nothing personal; I think he's a really great guy (see That Guy Josh), and I admire his willingness to
make himself so vulnerable for something that he believes in. Still, I don't think there's an essay
in the world that could change my mind about the absurdity of organized religion and most of the
beliefs these religions hold.

Despite that, I find Josh's assessment of our campus to be dead on. While it's second nature for many
of us to talk about the...

Here's to America. You, dear nation, are one of only a handful of first-world nations whose legal
drinking age is over 18. Your young adults-who in other arenas of their lives are considered old
enough to drive a car, choose the next president, and make life or death decisions in the military-are driven to drink in secrecy (and, quite frequently, in excess; see In Excess Drinking at RIT). Perhaps pursuing it
precisely because it is the last "forbidden fruit" of adulthood, they plunge into...

Editor's Note No Cars Go

Going to the car wash is one of my favorite activities. It's one of life's simple pleasures. For a few
fleeting instants, I'm able to take my hands off the steering wheel, sit back, and stop worrying. It
doesn't matter that I'm the one in the driver's seat; nothing is required of me for the next two and a
half minutes. Soap surrounds the car, dirt washes away, and I emerge from the other end of the tunnel
sparkling clean, feeling almost virtuous...especially as I look at all the filth caked...

Dear Reporter,
The Editor's Note in the March 21, 2008 edition
of the Reporter displays a common fallacy regarding
study abroad, namely that study abroad
is expensive. As the editor, you should have took
more time to check your facts and actually do
some research before printing it.

While some study abroad trips can indeed be
expensive, there are a number that can actually
end up being cheaper than staying at RIT a
quarter. I studied abroad in Germany, and my
costs ended up being...

In addition to the 32 pages you're used to, Reporter is evolving. We're becoming a digital beast as
well as a printed one. Considering the amount of time our student body collectively spends in front
of the computer every day, how could we not?

Our new website just got a makeover, and I must say, it's looking pretty
fine. We've got online exclusive articles, blogs, and-my favorite part-a convenient form to assist

How I Intend to Save the World from Total Intellectual and Cultural Darkness

My friends, I have caught a glimpse of the future, a monumental vision for the next great plateau
of man's dominance over the known universe. Compared to the coming technological innovation,
the moon landing will be a mere passing footnote in history, an insignificant flea on the back of a
